Anti-Holiday 2016: I Tried MAKE Beauty…And At First…

IMAG5008_1

I thought that I hated it, but this story does have a happy ending.

In keeping with exploring brands I’ve always wanted to in lieu of getting a bunch of holiday crap, I slowly eased into a beauty brand I’ve been keen to try for over a year now. Make beauty is headquartered in NYC and so much innovation comes out of the city that I had no qualms about picking up some of their rather pricey bits.

What’s New At The Drugstore: Nyx Total Control Drop Foundation Might Be A Giorgio Armani Maestro Dupe.

IMAG6081

(Update 5.12.17) So after I went off primer for a while and tried this foundation again, I did come to the conclusion that yes, it is an excellent dupe for GA Maestro. So if you love Maestro, but not Maestro money, have at it.

So you may have heard a bit of an uproar on social media over the new Nyx Total Control Drop Foundation. Everybody and their mama just had to get their hands on this thing, yours truly included.

At first I, like everyone else, thought that this was something like the CoverFX Custom Cover Drops. But you know, reading is fundamental, and after reading I realised that it’s not. It’s just foundation people, Nyx is being real tricky and sneaky like with the way they named it.

The Year in Makeup Favourites 2016.

Happy freaking new year ya’ll!! I promise in 2017, I’m gonna get my blogging life together. Maybe. Ok, probably not but I’m gonna try real hard. This year was just a complete a-hole that you wanted to throat punch constantly, and it ended with George Michael dying on frikkin CHRISTMAS DAY!!! Like, what the actual F%$K 2016?!

I drove to my sisters house jamming to Last Christmas (best Christmas song EVER), and came home to Twitter on fire. I always snicker when I hear people upset about celebrities that die, like what the hell, do you even know them? Can I just say though?

This one hurt, really badly. I’m sure he’d never remember me, but not only have I been absolutely in love with George Michael since I was ten, but I’ve met him a few times when I was working for a magazine and wound up repeatedly at NYFW much to my dismay.

He was friends with the original super models and a slew of the designers so he could usually be seen in the tents in the early 90’s. Talk about a ridiculously kind, humble, personable individual that always seemed slightly uncomfortable with the adulation he received. Beyond that, there was just some indefinable quality about his music, post Faith after he found his own voice, that’s simultaneously uplifting and despairing. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. I is still my favourite album. So really, is anyone reealllyy sad to see 2016 go?

Ridiculous SpaceNK Lord & Berry Haul!

IMAG6850_1

This was not the post that was to happen today, but I wanted to let you guys know about this so that you could get in while the getting is good because SpaceNK sales are like unicorns. They happen once, maybe twice a year. But when they do, they’re kind of ridiculous.

Like Beautylish, they’re a boutique cosmetics reseller, so think luxury brands like By Terry and some that you haven’t even heard of stateside. They have more brands than Beautylish, but there is some overlap. While their customers service is definitely on par with Beautylish, I’ve built a relationship with Beautylish over years and it feels less business-y so I tend to shop their more. So if you can imagine getting a foundation that normally costs $85 for $15 or $20, that would be a SpaceNK sale.

What’s New At The Drugstore: L’Oreal Infallible Total Coverage and Infallible Paints Blush Palette.

IMAG6026

Ok, so first off the pictures for this post are all over the damn place. I purchased, returned, then repurchased a few items. Well, not a few. a lot. Things aren’t pictured together, and I even forgot to take pictures and swatches of some things. The disappointment was strong in this portion of the haul people. This was all part of the Ulta haul that I did a few weeks ago, which was kinda messy but Ulta loves me, so they fixed it instantly.

L’Oreal is the drugstore brand that I’m most familiar with, I tend to purchase everything new that debuts. I don’t always review it, but I do purchase a lot of it. With the exception of the Pro Glow, I’ve loved every foundation that I’ve tried. Enter this joker to ruin the love affair.

Collective Vacation Haul: Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation & Colour Correcting Primer.

IMAG4536

You know how I’m always on about how Hourglass doesn’t really cater to dark skin beyond a certain point, so the brand was permanently, sorta off my radar? Well, Hourglass came through. Clearly someone over at head office has been listening to not only the criticism of Hourglass itself, but to the uproar from brown girls and allies in the beauty community about the absolute lack of representation and colour choices available in everything from foundation to blush and beyond. I mean there’s always been grumbling, but in the last few months black girls were like “um…you can’t fug wit me? Cool, I can’t fug wit you either”. When I say they came through, they did so like the Roman army, they conquered, put down stakes and made the scene their own. 26 shades people. 26. Their new Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation comes in 26 shades of awesome that range from the very lightest to the very darkest, and undertones for all! Got peachy undertones (raises hand)? Got golden undertones (raises hand again cause weird), got red, olive or neutral undertones? Not to worry, they got you. And for once, brown girls aren’t saddled with just neutral or red undertones in their foundation, the undertone process is very democratic, and we finally have more than two shades to choose from. From a mainstream brand, this is kinda huge ya’ll.

What’s New At The Drugstore: Wet n Wild Photo Focus Collection.

IMAG6124

Another day, another foundation review. I’ve been hauling a lot of drugstore foundations and just drugstore products in general lately because they seem to be on the come up. We’ve been getting some really great options that are oftentimes better than high end brands. Now with some of that comes higher prices, Nyx in particular price points just keep climbing and I don’t really see the products getting significantly better, just prettier packaged.
