When The Hype is Meh…

Skin care samples can save a life.

I mean it, skin care samples can literally be a way to save face sometimes. Particularly when you happen to get deluxe sizes that you can use for a week or more, so you can get  decent idea of how well a product will or won’t work for you. I’m lucky that my skin is very reactive and will let me know within a use or two if something is for me, others aren’t so fortunate.

Maybe you’ve been eyeing the newest hot skin care items on the market, but you’re reluctant to pull the trigger on purchasing because they’re hella expensive. For me this is a good route to take because I rarely return things, so I’d rather not get stuck with a hundred dollar jar of something that I can’t use. Usually Sephora point perks do not excite me, but when I got the Becca x Chrissy Teigen Palette there were a few from brands that I had wanted to try, so trigger pulled.

IT Cosmetics Confidence In Your Glow Blushing Bronzer.

IMAG0243_1

I like the idea of IT Cosmetics. The reality is often something else though for a couple of reasons. If you follow Jackie Aina on YouTube, she details how the foundations are too light for her. The one foundation she had been able to use, left her looking corpsey. I can use the last shade in most of their lines, Rich, pretty well. However I do get the grey cast that she talks about as well. The undertones on their foundation products for deeper complexions are…lacking.

@Ulta BareMinerals In Store Event. Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream.

IMAG0190

Last week my local Ulta had a Bare Minerals event in store, I’ve been on a bit of a Bare Minerals kick since around November so when they asked me if I’d like to attend, I said yes. The brand has done some updating of their products that make them a bit more appealing to me. It’s one of those events that they don’t seem to tell everyone about, and you have to make appointments for.

@Ulta BareMinerals In Store Event. BarePro Powder Foundation.

IMAG0192

While at the event, I was going to get the Complexion Rescue, but I was sitting right next to the display of BarePro and I saw my literal perfect shade or two. I had a choice of Cardamom 23 or Hazelnut 25, both indicated for dark skin but Cardamom has golden undertones and Hazelnut neutral. I dunno if I’ve ever told you guys how I’m often attracted to the darker, wrong colour? I just love deeper colours because they look so rich, I wind up choosing them over the lighter shade that I should and that’s what happened here. I should have chosen Cardamom but I got Hazelnut instead. It doesn’t suck, since it’s only maybe a shade and a half darker so it still looks ok. It’s also not as neutral as they claim it to be. In fact it is kind of golden, I just can’t use too much or else I wind up with that muddy look.

Becca x Chrissy Teigen Face Glow Palette.

IMAG0104

I was so excited when I heard that this palette was gonna be a thing. I mean, a brand that I appreciate and Chrissy Teigen team up to create a palette? Yeah, I’m there. Also, if you’re not following her on Twitter or Snapchat or Instagram, then I don’t know what to tell you about your life, cause she is hilarious!

I heard about the palette about two weeks before it dropped, and I was able to get it from Sephora a few days before it officially launched as an app exclusive offering. As with any highly anticipated launch there were all sorts of problems happening in the background. Pre-launch orders got cancelled before they shipped, cause apparently Lazership was breaking everything. Luckily mine came intact, albeit way later than a usual Sephora shipment.

Becca Backlight Priming Filter

IMAG1633

I got the Becca Backlight primer cause I’m Becca obsessed and well, it was new and I wanted to try it. It’s a radiance primer and generally speaking, I don’t care for most of them because I think they make me look super greasy. But this is Becca right? Where subtlety is the name of the game. Besides which, the only other radiance primer that I’ve ever liked, the one from Japonesque (review here), I managed to break it. Yeah.

Becca Mineral Blushes!

IMAG1624

I’ve become a true enthusiast of Becca cosmetics. They’re so flawless and subtle, it’s hard not to love pretty much everything that the brand debuts. The only thing that generally stops me is that it’s also pricey.

The mineral blushes aren’t new, but up to this point I hadn’t found a shade that I really loved. I’d tried Songbird, but since it was so peachy at the base, it mostly disappeared on me.

Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealing Cream.

IMAG0228

I’ve yet to meet a Becca product that I absolutely hate. For me to truly hate something, it has to be spectacularly bad, like off the charts bad. Even then things that I initially hate, I come back to and try again, cause you can’t ever really be sure, ya know? Like you may be having a bad skin day, or year, I dunno. sometimes, the products still suck, but other times you just have to learn to work with it like Kevyn Aucoin SSE.

This came pretty close to a dislike, and more because of the price than anything else. The Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealing Cream clocks in at a hefty $32 for .16oz. Now Becca products are generally pretty expensive, but in this case I felt the performance didn’t live up to the price tag. For that much, it should perform like a superstar and fit me like second skin. It’s doesn’t precisely do that.

BH Cosmetics Colour Lock Matte Lipsticks.

IMAG0734

So when I did the Coastal Scents lipstick review, I compared them to the BH ones without ever realising that I’d never even bothered to do a review for them. When I first got them, I’d taken product shots but I held off doing a review since some of the shades that I wanted were constantly out of stock. So I was waiting for them to be restocked so I could just do all of them at once. Then I got distracted by other stuff as usual. I decided not to wait for the rest of my order to come in (it’s just one other lippie anyway), so I broke out the shots I’d already taken, took some new ones and bam, post.

Coastal Scents Everlasting Lipsticks.

IMAG0146

I have been praying for I don’t know how long to the makeup gods that Coastal Scents would start making lip colour other than glosses. Imagine my delight when I got the email that not only had they newly launched 15 brand spanking new lipsticks, but that they were being offered at the introductory price of $2.95. I didn’t even really spend much more than a second thinking about it, before I just went on over an snagged all 15 of them. Ok, 14, I didn’t get one because I was pretty sure I wouldn’t even be able to give that frosty beige madness away, much less wear it.
